My husband and I were not wealthy, and added to our home as the children arrived and as we could afford. In 1968/9 we added two bedrooms and a second bathroom. The Lindsay Hydro suggested that we went all electric and we did. Double pane windows, lots of insulation. This enabled us to receive electricity at a preferred rate. First so many kilowatts at regular rate, and then it became cheaper the more we used. Now I am a widow in my 80s, and I receive your notice that the rates are to go up twice in just over a year! The Lindsay Hydro office was the best run in Ontario under the guidance of the Board and the management of Mr Jack Lightbody. We did not go into debt! But when we were taken over by Ontario Hydro and Hydro One we suddenly were paying off an enormous debt. All my life I have paid my way, and now, what will happen if I am unable to pay these new hydro bills? I know what will happen! My hydro will be cut off and I will be unable to cook, light my rooms, or heat them in the winter. What a dreadful mess someone has made of trying to deliver electricity to the public!
I wish that I could come to the hearings and have my say, but I couldn't even afford to get there!
